Hi, my name is Gregg Risner and this is my family. My wife Freddie (she also works in our office) and our 3 children Maxime (8), Haleigh (5) and Austin (3).
Let me tell you my story and why I became a Chiropractor.
When I was fifteen years old I lived in Longview, TX and was dreaming of becoming a meteorologist. One Saturday morning I was jumping on my trampoline. I was on a roll! I decided to try a double front flip. I almost made it. Almost.. I landed on the top of my head, my body followed forcing my forehead to hit my chest. I laid there for a while, in shock. I was able to move my toes and fingers. My family came out and helped me off the trampoline. I was still able to walk, with assistance. They immediately called the ambulance and I was taken to the ER.
The ER took X-rays of my neck to see what the extent of the damage was but after reviewing the X-rays they told me everything looked okay. My parents were relieved, I was okay! They gave me some medication for the pain and I was allowed to go home.
Days and weeks after the accident I was still in a lot of pain. At school I sat in the back row so I could lean my head against the wall for support. My mom was going to a Chiropractor for migraines so she took me for an evaluation. Armed with my one X-ray we went to the Chiropractor. He listened to what happened and then he asked to see the X-ray. He took one good look at them and then said “these X-rays were taken while you were laying down, we need to make new X-rays while you are upright so we can see the effect of gravity on your spine”. He took new X-rays with me sitting. After developing the films he was silent for a couple of seconds then he turned and looked at me. The following words changed my life forever. “You have a broken neck.” I was stunned but not surprise…I knew something bad was wrong. He proceeded to explain, the medical term was “bilateral facet dislocation”. My 5th disc and all the ligaments were completely ripped apart and another disc and ligaments were badly damaged. Generally, people who suffer a bilateral facet dislocation end up quadriplegic (paralyzed from the neck down). The only thing keeping my head on my shoulders were the muscles in my neck and back. The Chiropractor got me an appointment the next day with a surgeon in Tyler. The surgeon took out the ER X-ray. Knowing this appointment was set by a Chiropractor he looked at the xray, turned to me and said “Why are you here?” I told him; “there are more X-rays”. He tooked out the X-ray taken by the Chiropractor and he admitted me immediately, stating “if you go home I will not be responsible for what may happen to you. You could hit a pothole and it could paralyse you.” They performed other diagnotic procedures on me that day. I was operated on the next morning. They fused 3 neck vertebrae. I spent several days in a striker bed after which I had a halo on my head/neck for 3 months. Had I simply relied on the medical community I certainly would have never became a Chiropractor, if you know what I mean. I thank God for the Chiropractor and the Surgeons who put my neck back together.
